Balance Equestrian Centre
The seeds of Balance Equestrian Centre started decades ago, when owner/operators Wanda Gust and Susan Gosnell met in the Vancouver Pony Club as young girls. Our devotion and passion for riding and coaching developed quickly. Over the years we honed our skills, sometimes together, sometimes on opposite ends of the continent while showing, grooming and mentoring under members of the Canadian Equestrian Team.
Fast forward to 2013, when the opportunity to buy a 5.2 acre property in Campbell River arose. The property was perfectly set up for an equestrian facility, complete with an indoor arena. Although the idea seemed wild and almost unattainable, Wanda and Susan (and her husband!) gathered forces and funds, setting forth to open the doors of Balance Equestrian Centre in September 2013. Operations began, and included traditional and therapeutic riding lessons, children’s camps, horse boarding, birthday parties, pony rides, family fun days and class farm tours.

Our company started off as a way to provide families with an alternative to the traditional model of funeral services. We wanted to create a low pressure environment where the emphasis was on service, not pressure to up-sell merchandise. I have been driving commercially for the past decade. I started by running a snow plow for highways, spent time hauling fish up and down the island, ran the Mt. Washington ski busses, but my home in the trades was at Island Ready Mix where I drove concrete trucks for almost 8 years. I was always frustrated with not being able to find women’s work wear, and when an ongoing injury put me at a crossroads in life, I decided to take the challenge of finding women’s work wear into my own hands. Research and connections with other women taught me I was not alone in my struggle. I designed The Chick Truck, and my husband, Doug Rippingale, did the construction work from my graph paper. The truck/shop is packed with women’s high-viz, boots, coveralls, gloves and assorted work wear. I have a Kenworth, and I now haul the 32 foot semi-trailer to communities all over the province helping women working in industry and trades get the work wear they need, but that is so hard to find. It is more than my business, it is my destiny. I love truck driving and I am passionate about women in trades.

The Tara School of Irish Dancing opened its doors in Campbell River in January 2006, offering classes in traditional and contemporary Irish Dancing to boys and girls age five years to adult. Based on tradition, with a history tracing back to 1500's, Irish Dancing is a constantly evolving art form. Combining artistry, grace and physical strength, the dance itself has become increasingly intricate and athletic and popular worldwide.

Whiskey Point Resort is a 20-room inn above the Quathiaski Cove harbor on Quadra Island.
