Campbell River has plenty to cheer for this summer.
Twenty-one athletes across nine sports are heading to Maple Ridge for the BC Summer Games this month.
"Overall, our club continues to flourish as a high-quality competitive program that competes well locally, regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally," says Richard Millns, a head coach at Campbell River Killer Whales Swimming Club. "These young athletes are extremely skilled and hard-working and represent our awesome town very well."
The Killer Whales are sending four of their athletes to the games. They are Anisa Nelson, Saskia Schevers, Kenzie McArthur and Moriah Scott.
"This selection of all-star swimmers will represent Vancouver Island at the 'first step' of the games experience. Swimmers begin at the BC Summer Games, and as they progress, they can hope to compete in the Canada Games a few years from now, and of course, the third step in this progression is representing Canada in the Olympic Games," says Millns, who will be an assistant coach at the games.
Carter Granson, Kaylie Lofstrom, and Stella Nadler will represent Campbell River in athletics. Nolan Cathcart will be the lone representative from Campbell River on the Vancouver Island baseball team. Zoe Hudson is on the equestrian team, while Theo Munroe is the lone representative north of Nanaimo on the lacrosse team. Hunter Auramenko will be bringing his golf clubs to Maple Ridge. Ethan Martell and Logan Prokopchuk join the Island's soccer team, while Hary Laxdal, Grayson and Logan Wright will participate in the towed water sports events. Wrestling will also have a good chunk of Campbell River talent, with Carson Barton, Darius Martin, Evan McLean, Fayth Pontious, and Kaiden Warn set to go. Taynor Marks is the head coach of the Island's field lacrosse team.
The BC Summer Games start on July 17 and end on July 21.
