The Campbell River Salmon Kings had another great showing this past weekend at the Oak Bay Orcas 12th Invitational Swim Meet.

The high performance Commonwealth pool in Victoria is known amongst the swimmers as a “fast pool” and is often where they post best times in their events. This once again proved to be true for the 18 Salmon Kings participants, with most of them placing well in their races and achieving numerous best times. Several athletes shaved upwards of 20 seconds off their previous times. Division 3 girl Katie Revoy even managed to break two more meet records. She took more than a second off her own record from last year in the 50 Back, and broke another in the 50 Fly that had stood since 2010.

There were many other notable highlights over the two-day event. For three young swimmers, Ella Ricard, Myles Vose and Ruben Vose, this was their first “official” swim meet. They all swam a 25 m race unaided and received a candy bag and ribbon for their efforts.

For both the girls relay teams, the Division 5 (Rowan Sekulich, Katie Revoy, Jessica Revoy and Honor McDiarmid) and the “O” Category 2 (Hayley Taylor, Ella Vose, Charlie Langlois and Emily Magowan), it was swimming strong to a first place finish in their Medley relays on Saturday. (This is Magowan and Taylor’s first season with the Salmon Kings.)

Perhaps the most inspiring swim was done near the end of the meet by Division 6 swimmer Chloe Dobrinsky in the 100m Freestyle. Despite a shoulder injury, she dug deep and placed third in her heat, cheered on by almost every Salmon King in the building.

The Campbell River Salmon Kings will be attending their next meet at the outdoor pool in Courtenay on June 24 and 25.
