The Campbell River Curling Club (CRCC) hosted the 54th annual Ralph Boyd Men’s Open on Feb 1-4 welcoming 28 teams from all over the Island as well as the mainland.

The spiel has been the highlight of CRCC’s season for many years with manager Susan Johnson spending countless hours to ensure its success helped by continued sponsorship of Lordco and Thrifty Foods as our major sponsors.

The Inland Kenworth-sponsored A event was won by the Bezaire Rink, skipped by Kevin May, third Blaire Bezaire, second Edward Bellrose and lead Andrew Veldhuis. This team has been on a roll winning many events this year and had this A-Event title in their scope for years. They went up against the Rob Vlaj rink from Nanaimo/Campbell River consisting of Brendan Neff, Darryl Knowles and Calvin Parker. It was a great game to watch, right down to the last rocks.

The Hub Barton Insurance-sponsored B event was won by the Glen Vlaj rink of Campbell River, skipped by Craig Bernes, third Glen Vlaj, second Paul Miller, lead Cal Winquist. They went up against long time favourite and Campbell River club supporter, the Steve Whynott rink of the Comox Valley.

The No 1 Autobody-sponsored C event was won by Chris Roper of Campbell River, Chris skipping his team of third Paul Dashkewytch, second Dave Tees and lead Doug Hengel. Thye had a great toe-to-toe game against the David Sakai Rink.

The Bill Howich Chrysler-sponsored D event was won and skipped by the Andy Quant rink, playing third Chris Tolton, second Adam Sawula and lead Chuck Cave, they went up against the Tom Senay rink from the Mainland.

The Ralph Boyd Trophy handed out by Graeme Boyd to the most sportsmanlike team was given to the David Sakai rink.

Sakai’s team will be treated to a five-hour fishing trip with Karl Bro from Sea J Charters.

During the event the teams were treated to incredible hospitality with five-star meals by Brian and Sybil from the curling club’s in-house cafe and the Eagles ladies auxiliary. There was also fantastic salmon from Marine Harvest.

Susan would like to thank

Michelle and Gord Twanow ensured ice conditions were fantastic.
