Timberline girls runners-up
The Timberline senior girls volleyball squad won silver for the second tournament in a row.
This past weekend, they faced some extra challenges. They normally have two setters, but one of them, Tommi Corder, was out with a concussion. That meant their other setter, Nicole Herbert had to run the show. This was the first time she set an entire tournament and, despite a sore knee, did reasonably well, coach Terry Philp said.
In round robin play, Timberline beat Oak Bay 25-4, 25-12. Sarah Chase lead the team in kills and Brooklyn Reesor was top server, with five aces.
Next up was Ballenas from Parksville which Timberline defeated 25-15, 25-21. In that match Hayley Zumkeller and Brooklyn Reesor each served three aces.
The final round-robin match was against St. Thomas Aquinas of Vancouver, Timberline won 25-14, 25-16.
Winning the pool gave the local girls a bye to the quarter final, where they met Brentwood College, the host school and beat them 25-15, 25-18.
“We served and passed well that match, which is key when trying to run an offense,” Philp said.
In the semi-final against Vanier of Courtenay, Timberline came out flat and were down 16-10 in the first set. During a time-out coach Philp reminded the girls about the importance of being vocal and aggressive. It seemed to work and they came back and won 25-21. The momentum carried over into the second set which they won 25-13.
In the final, Lambrick Park definitely got the best of Timberline.
“They served tough and we really had trouble with constancy all around,” Philp said. “They beat us 25-15, 25-20. They are an incredibly tough team. They are very fast and powerful and almost impossible to block. I’m hoping the loss will motivate the girls to work hard in practice this week.”
This Friday and Saturday, Timberline hosts its annual tournament. On Friday, Carihi Secondary plays at 12 noon and 4:40 p.m.; Timberline plays at 3:30 p.m. and 5:50 p.m.
