Peter Baikie Isbister

June 21, 1931-October 21, 2010

We are very sad to announce the passing of Peter Isbister on October 21, 2010. Peter was raised on Denman Island, and often commented on how fortunate he felt to grow up “right in the middle” of a large family, on a farm, with his own relatives as next door neighbours. He met his wife, Julia, from Union Bay, while they were teenagers, and they married in 1957. The couple lived in several island communities before settling in Campbell River in 1969.

Peter worked for BC Hydro from 1963-1988. He was a Scottish Rite 33rd Degree Mason. Community involvement was important to Peter; he was active in the seventies as a volunteer firefighter, a Little League umpire, a hockey referee, and a Scout Leader. Later, Peter drove the Masonic Lodge Cancer Van up and down the island. Peter enjoyed card games, sports and “scratching” around Flettville on Denman Island. He was a kind and gentle man with an easy sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

Predeceased by his mother, Winnifred Baikie, and his father, Thomas Isbister, infant son Joseph, brothers Alex and William, and sister, Jean. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia (nee Vanyo), children Peter Jr. (Kathy), Stephen (Libby), Megan (Ian), Scott (Jodi), grandchildren Abby, Jack, Halle and Jake, sisters Beth, Kay, Helen, Hazel and Merlie, and brother Tom.

His family would like to thank the staff of Yucalta Lodge for the care and kindness they have shown Peter for the last year and a half. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the charity of your choice.

An open remembrance of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, October 30 from 1 to 4pm at the Union Bay Hall.
