The family of Mary Munro (nee Herman), age 101 years, sadly announces the passing of their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother at Yucalta Lodge where she had resided for the past 20 years. Mary was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1970, her son John in 1985 and her son-in-law Stan in 1992. She is survived by her son Jim (Georgia) and daughters Rita Petrie (Bill) and Peggy Anderson. Mary also leaves behind grandchildren Kathryn Jones (Robert), Wayne Anderson (Cheryl), Darren Munro (Kristi) and Tanya Munro (Brian); great-grandchildren Travis Jones, Tyler Jones (Jenni), Kieran Jones (Naomi), Sean Anderson (Ronda), Tara Anderson, Ryan and Kiah Ganton, and Kasey and Kennedy Munro; great-great grandchildren Lena, Ben and Claire Anderson; and her sisters Alma Wourms and Vicki Brewster. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary was truly a pioneer in Canada. She was born in Marienthal, Russia and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1908 where they settled on a farm in St. Walburg Saskatchewan. In 1925 Mary journeyed to Mission, BC where she met and married her husband Jim in 1929. They then moved to a float house and logged up and down the BC Coast with their four children until settling in Gorge Harbour on Cortez Island in 1942. The Munro family moved one more time to Campbell River in 1952 where they put down roots and where Mary continued to live until she passed away. She was very much loved by her family and friends and will be missed deeply.

A memorial services will be held at the Elk Falls Cremation and Reception Centre at Elk Falls Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, October 10 at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the “Yucalta Lodge Auxiliary”.
