It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Garnett (Gary) Edward Bergman. Predeceased by his parents and 3 sisters he leaves behind his wife of 72 years, Velma, his daughters Gail (Russ) McCoy, Lynn (Fred) Michaluk and son Philip (Annette) Bergman. His extended family includes granddaughters Jennifer (John), Corrine (Steve), Renea (Randy), Karsha, Hannah and Meaghan; great-granddaughters Kyla, Jaiden, Cianna, Kira, Shelby, Amy and Shayla as well as great- grandson Carson and great-great-granddaughter Elodie.

Gary was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and spent 7 years in the army during World War 2. A Master Sergeant, he served mostly in Vernon and Victoria training troops. After the war, he worked as an accountant in Vancouver for 4 years before purchasing the store at Shoal Bay, Thurlow Island. He and Velma operated the store there for over 4 years before purchasing the store at Whaletown, Cortez Island. As well as the Whaletown store, they operated a fish purchasing station and fuel dock on top of raising their family. For many who knew them on Cortez a lasting memory will be of Gary and Velma gliding across the dance floor at the numerous island events they attended. After operating the store for over 3 decades they retired and moved to Campbell River where they lived for the past 27 years. In retirement Gary enjoyed vegetable gardening, mason bees, carpentry and visiting with friends and family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. Thank you to Dr. Walker and all the staff at the Campbell River Hospital for making Gary’s last few days as comfortable as possible.
