Evelyn Matilda Lewis, born to Richard and Ethel Wareham on July 2, 1918 in Durban, Natal, South Africa, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2008 at Yucalta Lodge, Campbell River, B.C., at the age of 90 years. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Charles Lewis. She is survived by her loving family: son, David (Elaine) Lewis; daughter Elizabeth (Errol) Shardelow; grandchildren, Tracey, Shaune, Bridgette, Simon and Victoria; 5 great grandchildren and other relatives. Special thanks to Dr. Walker, the Nursing Staff and her special friends at Yucalta Lodge.

Evelyn served as a St. John’s Ambulance Nurse on the Hospital Trains during World War 2. She was an avid member of the Women’s Institute, enjoyed being a Cookery Judge a Drama Conveyor, and loved all of God’s creatures. Evelyn was loved for her interesting stories and wonderful sense of humour. She was a dedicated Democratic Party Member in South Africa, and fought for the principles of justice and equality.

A Funeral Service in Memory of Evelyn will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 228 South Dogwood Street, Campbell River, BC on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 1:00 PM with Reverend Blair Haggart officiating. Private Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations In Memory of Evelyn Lewis may be made to Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society, RR 4, Station Main, Courtenay BC, V9N 7J3.
