The Tyee Club of B.C. will be doing its annual “underwater” cleanup of the Campbell River Estuary on March 3.

The Tyee Spit and Campbell River estuary have undergone an amazing transformation over the past 20 years. Once an industrial area and booming ground, the mouth of the Campbell River is slowly becoming a friendlier place for fish, fowl and wildlife.

Underwater is not such a pretty picture. Over the last four years, The Tyee Club of BC has removed tons of underwater debris, including over 300 tires. In the small area they have covered, there are at least another 200 tires to be brought to the surface.

This year they’re ramping up the effort, with funding from the Campbell River Salmon Foundation, the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and the Rotary Clubs of Campbell River and the Comox Valley (proceeds from the Rotary fishing derby 2017!). They will have eight commercial divers and four boats, and will be producing a short video of the cleanup effort.

They will need some volunteers on Saturday, March 3. It is heavy work, as the tires come up filled with mud, weighing 40 lbs+ each. Full rain gear and rubber boots are a must.
