Passport applications and renewal forms can now be dropped off in Campbell River.

Campbell Riverites applying for a Canadian passport can now do so locally.

Campbell River’s Service Canada Centre is now functioning as a passport receiving agent, as part of the federal government’s efforts to make passport services more accessible.

“The Government of Canada has expanded passport services at Service Canada Centre locations across the country, such as the one in Campbell River,” said Amélie Caron, spokesperson for Employment and Social Development Canada. “This will make accessing passport services more convenient as 93 per cent of Canadians will be able to access in-person passport services within a 50 kilometre distance of their home.”

Campbell River’s Service Canada Centre, which is located at 950 Alder St., will accept both five and 10-year general passport applications for adults and children, as well as simplified renewal passport applications, and will review them to make sure that they are accurate and complete, validate supporting citizenship documents, collect the application fee and forward the application package for processing to Passport Canada.

Canadians will now also be able to have their supporting documents required for passport applications, such as birth certificates and certificates of citizenship, validated and returned to them immediately when they submit their application.

Caron said by expanding passport services across the country, the government is trying to reduce wait times at the Service Canada offices that only provide passport services by offering them at more locations.

Previously, the closest passport application drop-off location for Campbell River residents was in Courtenay.

Now, passport applications can be received closer to home except for in special circumstances.

Campbell River’s Service Canada Centre cannot accept applications if the applicant is planning to travel in less than the advertised processing time (in that case, applications must be presented in person to the Passport Canada office in Victoria), if your current passport is still valid for more than one year, if your passport is lost, stolen or damaged, you do not have a guarantor, you are applying on behalf of a child and only one of the parents is participating in the application, you are requesting a free replacement, or your application includes a legal name change that is not due to a change in relationship status.
