Carihi, Cedar schools put on lockdown on Monday

Lockdown requested by the RCMP after someone was spotted with a replica gun

Carihi Secondary and Cedar Elementary were placed on a short lockdown Monday morning at the request of the RCMP after someone was spotted with a replica gun.

The situation was resolved and the individuals involved were in police custody before École Phoenix Middle School had to go into lockdown as well, School District 72 reported on its website Monday.

The SD72 notice appeared shortly after the situation had been resolved saying all students were safe and the lockdown had been lifted.

Campbell River RCMP reported that two youths had been detained and one was in possession of an Airsoft gun.

Possession of the guns is not illegal but using them to damage property or threaten, intimidate, or assault people is, regardless of whether they are real or not.

For obvious safety reasons, police treat these situations as a weapon scenario until they can determine whether the gun is real or not.

Four or five police cars were on the scene Monday morning and had 4th Avenue blocked off for a period of time.
