City asked to chip in funds to print maps of the city

Campbell River’s newest attraction will grace the cover of this year’s city map.

Cathy Kaardal, general manager of Progress Publishing which puts out the What’s On Digest, said the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge will be featured on the Campbell River 2015/16 City Map.

“This map is currently in production and we see this as a great opportunity for the City of Campbell River to pay tribute and assist us in bringing attention to this world class attraction,” Kaardal wrote in a letter to council.

Kaardal asked council for $2,500 from the city to produce an additional 5,000 maps, on top of the 22,000 maps set to be printed this month.

Kaardal said in exchange, the map would feature the Campbell River City logo.

But Coun. Charlie Cornfield said he wasn’t sure if it was in the city’s budget to fund the maps.

“These maps of our community and the marketing and promotion of our community is very important and the group that supplies them now, they do a lot of work,” Cornfield said.

“But I’m not sure if there’s money in the tourism budget to contribute money for funding some additional maps because that seems to be a lot.”

Council voted to have city staff come back with a report on funding options.

The maps are supplied by Progress Publishing to the Campbell River Visitor Centre and are circulated at all major visitor centres on Vancouver Island, on major ferry routes to the Island, and at all major tourist destinations.

It is also available at more than 200 locations around Campbell River, including at high traffic outlets, all motels and hotels, and recreational centres.

This year’s map will show the physical proximity to Elk Falls and the suspension bridge from downtown, as well as routes to other attractions. It features detailed information to hiking trails, mountain biking trails, the Snowden Forest, marinas, tourism destinations and annual events, according to Kaardal.
