Cortes ferry rescues boat from running aground
The MV Tenaka was called in to rescue a boat Wednesday.
The Tenaka is the BC Ferry that sails between Quadra Island and Cortes Island.
Shortly after 3 p.m., the Coast Guard called the captain on the Tenaka and requested their assistance with a 24 foot vessel in distress near Viner Point on Read Island.
The vessel’s engine was reported to be overheating and the two passengers were afraid they were going to go on the rocks near Viner Point.
The ferry launched a zodiac rescue boat and towed the pleasure craft to shore at Heriot Bay.
The Tenaka was delayed for short period of time in order to assist in this marine emergency.
“BC Ferries usually assists in 20-25 marine emergencies throughout the service area in a given year,” said BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall.
“The employees train for many different incidents and their professionalism was demonstrated yesterday during this situation.”
