Cyclist killed

An elderly male cyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon after colliding with a vehicle on Jubilee Parkway.

The tragic accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m., just west of Dogwood Street. Campbell River RCMP said the 74-year-old Campbell River man was given immediate first aid, but died at the scene. His name was not released.

“Support to the family of the deceased was provided by the Campbell River RCMP Victim Services,” said Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard in a news release.

Police spoke with witnesses and the 27-year-old Nanaimo driver who remained at the scene. The investigation is continuing and will focus on possible causes for the collision.

Police do not suspect speed or alcohol as factors. The road was closed for several hours for the investigation.
