Speeding truck hits trailer
Speed and not wearing safety belts were factors in a two-vehicle collision Monday afternoon in front of the Heron’s Landing Hotel.
The accident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. According to Campbell River RCMP, a black Dodge was reportedly travelling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and went off the right side of the Island Highway. The truck collided with the rear end of a trailer and pick up parked on the road side.
The driver of the second vehicle had just left his truck and was standing by the hotel when the accident occurred.
The male driver of the Dodge sustained serious upper body injuries and a female passenger was also injured. Police say they were not wearing their seatbelts and both were transported by ambulance to Campbell River Hospital.
RCMP Sgt. Troy Beauregard said alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
However, he added, the driver had borrowed the “highly-modified” pickup and was unfamiliar with the vehicle.
The investigation is continuing and no charges have been laid.
