Bail hiked for accused hospital thrift store thief
Bail is set at $10,000 for a man accused of breaking into the hospital thrift store, assault and six other charges.
“He has a number of matters before the court which are troubling,” said Judge Thomas Dohm.
As of Thursday, Darren Mould, 20, remains in custody in Victoria. On Monday, he appeared by video in Campbell River provincial court where Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons asked the judge to revoke Mould’s original bail.
Mould was first arrested Aug. 25, 2012, during an investigation of a break-in and theft of costume jewelry from the Campbell River Hospital Thrift Store.
The investigation led to the nearby hospital emergency room where Mould was found. He claimed he was stabbed by some men who had jumped him.
However, Mould was arrested after he appeared to match the description of the man seen on the thrift store’s surveillance video and costume jewelry was found in his coat.
On Dec. 28, police were out looking for Mould after he allegedly bit and tried to strangle a woman before fleeing the scene. A police dog led officers to a home on 7th Avenue, but the resident who answered the door claimed Mould was not there. However, when told a police dog had tracked the scent to his door, Mould suddenly appeared and was arrested.
He had been drinking sherry and denied assaulting the woman. “I didn’t assault anyone. Show me the knuckle marks on her face,” he told police.
Mould has been in custody since then. Judge Dohm issued a new bail order requiring a $2,500 cash deposit, along with a $7,500 surety, but so far Mould has not perfected bail. He is charged with assault, break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property, driving while prohibted, and three counts of breaching a court order.
He is due back in court on Monday.
