POLICE BEAT: Well-known thief arrested again
A Campbell River man with a history of property offences is behind bars again in connection with thefts from boats.
Richard Humphreys, 35, is currently locked up at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in Victoria and is slated to have a bail hearing in Courtenay provincial court on Thursday.
He’s charged with six offences in the Comox Valley, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of possession of stolen property.
Humphreys is also facing five additional charges, relating to two separate incidents in Campbell River. The charges include two counts of break and enter, two counts of theft and one count of possession of stolen property.
According to Campbell River RCMP Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard, police investigated multiple reports of break-ins at a fenced marina and nearby compounds during the last week in July.
“The Campbell River Forensic Identification Section attended to several of these break-ins and were able to identify a suspect,” he said in a news release. “Further investigation resulted in the recovery of stolen property and the arrest of a well-known offender who was recently released after serving a jail sentence for property crime.”
Drunk driver hits dumpster
Police responded to a call of a collision involving an impaired driver on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Investigation revealed that a blue Pontiac Montana van had crashed into a dumpster. The impaired driver was identified as a female.
However, following the collision, the male passenger who was also impaired, attempted to drive the van away.
Both were required to submit to a roadside screening device and refused. As a result, the two were issued 90-day driving prohibitions and the vehicle was impounded.
In the last week RCMP responded to 304 calls for service.
Police arrested four impaired drivers and issued three immediate roadside prohibitions.
Mounties attended four motor vehicle collisions that resulted in minor injury or property damage. Police also dealt with 25 reported incidents of people intoxicated in public or causing a disturbance by being drunk.
