Thief diverts driver and steals van

Police are looking for a man involved in the brazen theft of a woman’s van from the Walmart parking lot.

According to RCMP, the woman had just finished loading her groceries into her vehicle on Friday, around 9:30 p.m., got into the driver’s seat and started her van. That’s when she was approached by a man who said something was wrong with one of her tires. When the woman got out to have a look, the thief jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away. Extensive police patrols over the next two hours resulted in the recovery of the van outside the Willow’s Pub on Rockland Road, but the thief wasn’t caught. He is described as 5’10”, with a slender build and was wearing a snowboard -style jacket.

“These types of crimes are of particular concern to police as they unfold quickly, often with the stolen vehicle fleeing at a high rate of speed,” said Sgt. Craig Massey in a news release. “This aggressive manner of escape has the potential to cause desperate vehicle owners to be dragged. Additionally, it poses increased risk to other pedestrians and road users.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
