Students at Carihi recently had an opportunity to work with an expert in the improv theatre world.

Graham Myers is the owner and Artistic Director of Second Storey Theatre and a founding member of Table 23 Comedy in Coquitlam.

He has been performing and teaching improv since 1998, all over the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and beyond.

Myers came up to Campbell River at the request of Carihi teacher Christine Knight to work with her Senior Improv team, but he also ended up spending time working with acting classes as well.  Students were treated to several workshops designed to improve their skills in improvisational theatre, and had fun with Myers’ quick-witted, no nonsense style of teaching.

For Myers it was an opportunity to teach the students more about something he is passionate about.

“My favourite part about teaching is watching them rock a show and seeing them get the rush of success because they put the work in,” says Myers, who spent two days at Carihi.

Along with the workshops, it was also a chance for Myers to reunite with his high school Drama teacher.

“Graham was in my class when I was a new teacher, around 1994.  It’s amazing to see how far he has gone with theatre…a great example of the student surpassing the teacher,” says Knight.

The Carihi Senior Improv team is starting up another season with the Canadian Improv games, and with the skills they picked up from Graham, it promises to be a fantastic year.
