Hamper help needed

The depot for the Community Christmas Hamper Fund, organized each year by the Knights of Columbus, is now open.

The depot is located in the Tyee Plaza at 1325 Shoppers Row, right next to the building occupied by the former SuperValu Store.

Beginning yesterday, it is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept donations of money, food and toys for this year’s hampers. This is the only location where donations may be made for the hampers.

The application forms for the hampers are available at the Campbell River Employment & Income Assistance Office 833A 14th Ave. The deadline for completion of an application is Tuesday.

The date for delivery of the hampers is Sat., Dec. 17, which is a full week before Christmas. On that day volunteers from the community will be welcomed to help in the assembly and then in the delivery of the hampers.

While it is demoralizing to go without at any time of the year, it seems particularly cruel to be lacking at Christmas, especially for the children. The purpose of the Hamper Fund is to ensure that the less fortunate members of our community will share in the same spirit of joy of the season as everyone else.

As the title of the fund suggests, its purpose is very season-specific. Thus, there is a very short window of opportunity to donate money, food and toys for the people of Campbell River that need them.

In the time between now and the middle of December Campbell Riverites’ donations in support of the fund is essential to ensure its success.

Meanwhile, the Mirror’s Pennies for Presents deadline is Dec. 16.

The money collected from this campaign is used to buy presents to be included in the Knights’ Christmas Hampers.
